I was talking to one of my Private Coaching Clients today, and one of the very first things she told me was that for the past three months in her new online business, she just couldn’t get things done. She knew what she had to do, but she just couldn’t do it. She’d sit in front of the computer and freeze. She was stuck.
I told her it’s ok, that happens to most people, even happens to me sometimes. But the key is not to avoid feeling that way, but to know how to instantly get out of that state and get into a state that allows you to be more productive and work towards your goals.
How do you do this? The first thing you need in your life, before anything else, is a big WHY. A strong reason why you’re doing things. If your why isn’t strong enough, it won’t lead you to do the necessary actions that will get you to achieve your goals. Your Why is even bigger than the How.
For example, if you say you want to live a healthier lifestyle, you probably start eating healthy the next day, and exercising, and perhaps you’ll last for a day or two, and then you’ll fall back into your old habits. The reason is, you haven’t really discovered why you want that healthier lifestyle. In my personal case, I made that change in my life 3 years ago. My mother was diagnosed with a liver tumor, and I immediately began to research what to do to beat it. One day a friend on Facebook recommends a book to me, and that book changed my entire view about disease, the medical system, the food we eat and of course, cancer. I had to not only help my mom get better, but I also discovered so much new information, that I needed to make sure I wouldn’t get sick of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, you name it. I had to make changes in my life too.
I have slowly begun to make it a mission to help other people find out this information to prevent disease. My why was now really big, much bigger than the unhealthy things I used to have that I thought tasted great. My Why wasn’t just about me, it involved people I loved and even people I didn’t even know.
When your Why is bigger than YOU and bigger than any excuse you can make, you will do anything to fight for that why. When you set goals with your Why in mind, you can achieve anything. So when you’re in a state where you don’t know what to do, think about your Why. If it’s the right one, it’ll get you moving forward.
That’s the first step to get you unstuck. Have a big enough Why and keep it at the top of your mind. If it’s not working, then ask yourself, Do I really want to be doing this? Perhaps the actions you’re taking aren’t congruent with your why. Maybe you’re not even a bit passionate about your business, your job, or your daily activities. Maybe that why is just a fantasy. And you can’t live your life based on fantasies.
I was listening to an interview with Dr. John Demartini the other day. And he said “your goal and your vision need to be congruent with your highest values”. So every time you engage in a new activity, or a business venture, make sure it’s aligned with your highest values.
Another powerful tool is Tony Robbins’ concept of the Triad. When you’re feeling stuck, there are three forces that control your emotions: Focus, Language and Physiology. Motion creates Emotion. First and easiest to change is your physiology, start smiling, stand up and jump, immediately you’ll feel better. Then, change your focus. If you’re focusing on the negative, on what you don’t have, on what you can’t do, you won’t see the solution. Focus on the positive, on solving the problem in front of you. Finally, the language. Use empowering words, remove words such as should, if, or hope from your vocabulary. There’s a lot more to this, but I’ll talk about it in more detail in an upcoming video 🙂
In the case of internet marketing, if you’ve started an online business, or you’re wondering how to do it, the first reason why that probably comes to your mind is “I want to make more money”. And that’s ok, it’s a good reason for most people, and it certainly was a reason for me back in 2008 when I got started. But you need to dig deeper, you need to get to a place where your why gets you really excited. Wanting to make money just because is not powerful enough. It has to make you feel like you can’t wait to get up in the morning to work on your project, your business, your goal. So, why do you want to make more money? Maybe you want more freedom, maybe you have a dream of starting a non-profit company, maybe you want to donate money to help others, or for research. Maybe you need the cash-flow to fund another company that is your true passion. Whatever it is, make sure it’s big and gets your juices flowing!
